I'm thinking I'd buy gold bars. Trade the million in for a million dollars worth of gold.

omg a MILLION dorrars??
i'd probably buy a spaceship and maybe an island in the bahamas... no: and island on THE MOON! then i'd live there with enough virgins to last me the rest of eternity (72 should do)
i'd then fly the spaceship to coruscant and buy a hyperspace drive and explore the universe with my plethora of virgins. we would then spread the human race to other planet in a pseudo-panspermia kind of way and i would be the god of these new human planets and i would tax them and make them give me their 72 most beautiful virgins every year to stay my godly wrath.
i'm sure anyone else would do the same if it was possible to have a >>>MILLION<<< dorrars, regardless of their lies about giving it to charities and such.

Not really. As long as it's not coming from any endangered species, I don't see anything wrong with it.
I would just put it in Multiple CDs and Portfolios. Buying Gold now isn't going to do you any good. It's already sky-rocketed in Price. It's not going to go much higher, and when it falls, you're going to lose a pretty penny.

Not really, donating 1m$ now to charity will mean you make a few charity receives slightly better off for a few days and will place yourself at the risk of being a charity receiver yourself in the long run.
If you put the cash into the bank and live off the interrest (somewhere between 1000-3000$ per month) and donate a part of that, then you can carry on donating and you can live nicely yourself. Furthermore you are not in danger of becomming poor yourself.
You have to remember. People need the money now because they are poor, but there is always going to be poor people who need money if you donate now or later. You will be helping more people if you donate in smaller portions and keep it up instead of spending everything at once.
Plus another advantage of putting the money in the bank (probably bad timing to say this atm because of the credit crysis) is that banks work with the money. If they dont mess up and get their heads outside of their behinds and work with money instead of possible winnings they will use the 1m$ you put into the bank to lend it to companies to invest. This way companies can buy modern machines and work with them. Working companies = employees which = people not needing charity money. Its all a big cycle, what goes around comes around.

I dont know if I'd actually put the money in any US bank due to if the banks go down you're only insured to $100k through FDIC.

1 million dollars? Thats not a whole lot... I would put a quarter aside for education, another quarter for a house, and then put half of it in the bank or stocks(hopefully when the market is better). Then go on to live a pretty normal life...
